IE7 on XP: desktop shortcuts 2 links open wrong browser
I use Outlook 2002 for all my email and IE7 for all my internet browsing. I have a few websites that I want to access immediately (w/o having to open browser and select from list). I have tried every way possible to move a favorite to my desktop as a shortcut, but when I select it, it asks "SBC Yahoo is not your default browser. Do you want to make it your default?", and then it opens the favorite in my SBC Yahoo browser window. I cannot make it save to my desktop as an IE favorite, even though I have copied it directly from internet explorer. I have tried dragging the favorite from my drop-down list in IE directly to the desk top. There it is, but when I open, SBC...

    Thanks for any help!!

Create a shortcut from scratch on the desktop by:
    1. Right-click desktop.
    2. Choose New > Shortcut and follow the wizard for the site you want.
    3. Double-click the new shortcut.

Which browser loads the site? If IE, IE is registered as default browser, if not it's SBC. This can be changed from the Set Program Access and Defaults Start Menu item (you may need to visit Control Panel > Taskbar and Start Menu and enable display) or from the IE Tools > Internet Options > Programs Tab > "IE should check whether..." item and restarting IE and selecting it as default.

When SBC asks if you want to make it default, what do you choose?

I had a similar issue with Firefox and what Scleros describes about going into Control Panel / Add Remove Programs / Set Program Access and Defaults is what I had to do to solve the problem. Also make sure that SBC doesn't have anything running in your system tray that resets your default browser when it detects a change.

    always "no"

I have verified, and undone and redone, making IE my default browser as well as indicated that I should be notified if the browser changes. I have looked for settings for Yahoo which I cannot find anywhere. I have found some Yahoo items in my software, but don't know if I can uninstall and still receive my sbcglobal mail (forwarded).

Thank you for your thorough reply, but so far, no good. Any more ideas? Thanks!!

I'm wondering if Yahoo changed the default action for http to use their browser automatically instead of the default browser.

    Try this:
    1. Double click on My Computer
    2. From the menu select Tools then select Folder Options.
    3. Click on the File Types Tab.
    4. Look for the Internet Shortcut. (See FolderOptions.png)
    5. Select it and click the Advanced button.
    6. Under Actions select open and click the Edit button.
    7. It should look like BrowserOpenAction.png.

Let us know how it goes...

Me again. This is interesting. I went into Start menu and programs and found Yahoo DSL and opened it. It took me into the SBCYahoo browser. I went to settings and internet options, and the menu was just like in IE. But when I went to programs, the option for web browser default was grayed out, like you can't set it to IE! Maybe I'm hosed on this stupid concept!
