email inbox tripling

I have 832 messages in inbox. On accessing the inbox the messages almost immediately triple in quantity rendering the entire mail folder inaccessible. Attempts to delete messages from separate folders are undone because I have to force quit and the changes go unsaved. I'm assuming that I've simple exceeded my space, but have no idea how to clear mails to free it up. Any advice gratefully accepted.

Hi, patteran!

My first thought is that you have some sort of virus infecting your computer. Do you have any sort of virus protection installed on your computer that also takes care of your email?

Hopefully, others will also be along to address your question.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response. Could be, I guess. But I'm wondering now whether a dodgy cache cleaner that I'd downloaded might have corrupted the mail cache. Anyway, the problem remains unresolved at present. I can access email via my MacBook (the other laptop's a Powerbook) so I can send and receive, but I want to get this sorted asap. So any other theories and/or fixes gratefully received!
