Disk spinning out of control

I recently replaced my hard drive with a WD 250GB. Started from scratch, reformated, and loaded win xp pro. Now, regularly, really nearly always, if I leave my computer unattended for about 30-60 minutes, my drive spins up, out of control, and I cannot regain control of the computer w/o powering down and restarting (or hard reboot). My anti virus is Norton and up-to-date. I use spyboot.

WD help desk had me remove the data cables and let it sit. nothing happened which means to WD that the problem isn't the disk, it means I have some kind of virus.

a) has anybody ever heard of this?
b) any suggestions to fix short of reformatting the drive which I loathe to do.
