I can´t connect to internet!

Ok here is the deal... i have a laptop compaq and i have since 1 year and in the laptop i have wireless so i need to put on the wirless bottonn so i can have internet but the problem is.... one day i was gonna use my laptop and when i push the botton on it was still of the light up the bottom must be blue and it was red and i saw the internet in my laptop and i was not connected and it didn´t find any network to connect.... i don´t know what to do please help!!!
