Can someone explaine to me the best way to use & set up DC++,Thanks

I've downloaded the newest DC++ program for windows. but haven't opened it up yet. I am so disappointed with download speeds in general, ( ie. p2p etc) that I'm searching for a better way. Also is there a faster way to send large files to another client? Any insight would be helpful,
