Internet Explorer won't start

Whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, it displays the basic window, but won't load the homepage or any other page when I tried to type one in. I tried re-installing IE8 and even installed FireFox, but it does the same thing. This just starting happening about a week ago. I suspect a possible virus, but none are flagged when I run anti-virus program (AVG). This is someone else's laptop (Compaq). Please give me some suggestions on how to fix this.

I would suggest to try and uninstall IE 8 from add/remove programs to see if this would make a difference
