How can I find out if an online business is a real business and not someone that's trying to scam me. Do I check with the BBB or where do I start?

I'd check complaints.com and TheSqueakyWheel.com - we get refunds! to see if anyone has posted complaints about the business. Then I'd google for "companyname scam" and just plain "companyname" to see what others have written about the company. You'd be surprised what you can find this way. I'd also look for complaints filed with bbb.org.
