| Legal Short-Term Work Overseas I am a US citizen, currently residing in the States. My husband (also a US citizen) & I want to do outside consulting/freelance work outside of the States (in multiple countries). Our goal is to frequently be requested to come to design firms in other countries to assist on a project-by-project basis. Each trip we would be working for a different business and would last for anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks. In between trips we would be back living in the States. First of all, is this legal?? We want to go about this in a VERY legal way -- not cutting any corners or breaking any laws (even if there's no chance of getting caught). Because these potential trips will be relatively short and we will have no intention of either getting permanently hired by these companies OR moving to these countries, would a long-term work VISA still be required?? Is there such thing as a short-term work VISA? Will these companies have to request/pay for/etc. a VISA for us every time or can we get a "blanket" VISA for a particular country that would cover us regardless of who we're doing the work for? Will we be required to pay taxes on the money earned to both the foreign country and the U.S. even though we're not living in both countries? Thank you for any and all advice you can give! We appreciate your time! |
