    Tile adhesive won't dry and smells
    My moms vinyl floor was coming up. After lifting the floor, I had some premixed tile adhesive and spread it and pressed the floor down on it. The floor is no longer bubbling up but it smells like sour milk. I realize now that I used too much glue and I didn't allow it to dry a little before putting down the vinyl. The weather has been hot and humid. Will it ever dry and stop smelling or have I totally ruined it? Thanks for any advice!

    Did you use tile adhesive or vinyl adhesive ?

    Hi all:

    AC101 has you headed in the right direction here. Sounds like you used the wrong adhesive. You wanted to use a vinyl composition tile adhesive... see image.

    If you did use the wrong adhesive it should be easy enough to pull up the vinyl tile and scrape away the tile adhesive.

    Then it should be as simple as troweling the correct adhesive onto the floor (use a 1/16" X 1/32" X 5/64" U-notch Economy Trowel), letting it dry until tacky (or as instructions suggest) and then installing the vinyl tile again. Use a weighted tool box or similar to put weight on the tile(s) for awhile affter installing.

    Wow you folks sure are quick with your replies! Thanks! I used "Henry 430 vinyl tile adhesive" I had it from a previous project and I just noticed it has a date stamped on it 02/20/07 so I'm guessing that is an expiration date and might account for the smell? The floor looks good, it is flat--it just is a little squishy in spots but the yucky foul smell is the biggest issue. I'm hoping in time it dries really well and the smell goes away... I just wondered if that will happen.

    It will eventually dry at least to some degree was this a sheet vinyl you glued back down?

    Sn6 said it is tile adhesive, but didn't mention if the floor is vct tiles of sheet vinyl. Used Henry's #430, which is a clear thin spread made for vct tiles. Besides being a little old, (which may not matter?), SN6 didn't read the directions, probably applied too much and did not let it get tacky before setting the tiles. You are supposed to let it dry, might take an hour or maybe 3 hours? It will not dry now, the glue still thinks it's in the can. It will continue to oooze in the cracks for many years. I agree you may have used the wrong adhesive if the floor is sheet vinyl instead of vct tiles.

    JazMan you are right. I ended up pulling up the sheet vinyl and washing away the glue and letting the floor dry totally. Next its back to the store for the right product and I will read all instructions first! Thanks everyone!
