Help - I am trying to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear. Can I install tile over sound kitchen counter formica ?

...intend to bring the sink up to the new height if you don't remove the formica? I would think it is possible but not sure how to secure the cement backer board to the formica. Not sure if in the absence of backer board thinset will even adhere to formica.

You could try just putting a dab of tile cement on the counter and letting it dry. Then see how hard it is to remove. If it really sticks, you should still be able get if off with a razor scraper. If it doesn't stick very well, try sanding the Formica. Use a course grit paper and completely remove all gloss.

It appears that you are trying to save time and effort. However, considering the amount of additional trouble that you could run into (adhesion problems, countertop overhang compatibility, particle board sagage...), I would just go through and replace the formica top with 3/4 inch plywood and 1-3 layers of cement board. Formica tops are easty to remove, they usually can be unscrewed from inside the cabinet, plywood comes precut to 24 inches, which is perfect for countertops. The (apparent) additional effort outweighes the potential problems. Good luck! Josef

Formica is a "plastic " sheet therefore it would be like trying to paint plastic ..not too much adheres to it..the only way other than removing it or installing plywood over it, would be to sand the formica with a rough grit..belt sander would be the best..i've install ceramic tiles over linoleum floors but with the proper grout...if you check the different type of grout you'll find a variety for different applicaton hence the price difference...

I thought you wanted to tile a backsplash....if it's a counter top and it has a square edge then maybe but also keep in mind that your grout lines will have to be well sealed for sanitary reasons...also i was wondering if you've thought about the edges of the top..how are you going to finish of the sides and edges to acheive the look you want...
Tile on an overhang will not last...
