Strange smell

i shifted to a new rental apartment. the problem is that it has this strange smell whenver i enter it. i think its the wood or the carpet and since the room is closed and locked all day.
my q is how can i get rid of it permanently? i use airfreshner but it doesnt do any good. once inside, i cant sense the smell, but when you come from outside and enter you know its there. what causes this smell? is anyone aware of it? n how do i get rid of it?

If you can't determine the source of this smell, I don't see how you will be able to eliminate it?

Kinda tough to "describe" a strange smell over a web site.

Have you tried asking the landlord to correct the problem, maybe just to get an idea if they know what the cause may be?

progunr, its actually supposed to be a common smell in all the apartments, coz i remember in my prev apt too, it existed. some one told me its because of the wood or something. but i went to one of my friends place who stays in similar apt, and it was so fragrant there. couldnt ask him how he got rid of it though!!! :-) am new to this place and dunno if its common in such homes for this smell.

Gosh, there are so many possibilities, the stain, or varnish, or even the type of wood that was used.

Also, some carpet dyes have a very pungent odor, is the carpet new?
