The nails that hold the treads have worked loose. Pre-drill a pilot hole and use wood crews of an appropriate size. A dab of wood glue into each hole before the screw goes in will help. If screws cannot be used, install the nails at opposing angles to reduce pull-out.
I hope this helps!

Id use 10penny finish nails, if there hard wood treads
If its carpet you can use nails but it will work better if you use finish screws.

Squeaking means movement and its likely the nails have worked loose like Captain and Glavine suspect. If you can get at the underside of the stairs I would also apply construction adhesive along all seams in addition to the nailing or screwing. The only snap off screws I have seen were for carpeted floors but maybe they would work for you, you will still see the hole but you can dab a small amount of wood dough on the spot.

I recently had a little "fix it" job of squeaky stairs. After nailing down all the treads to the stringers I still had squeaks. When I looked underneath I saw that the manufacturer had nailed up from the tread into the 3/4 plywood riser. About half of these nails split out the side of the riser. These were what was squeaking. This was a cheap set of builder stairs to the basement. I install a number of L brackets with short screws to tie the treads to the riser. Still had some squeaks but helped a lot. Made it acceptable when carpet was installed on stairs.

I am interested in pouring concrete 'pyramid-like' stairs. I would prefer to do this one stair at a time. How long should I wait for the first stair to cure before I pour another?
