I had someone put in a ceramic tile floor for me and did a terrible job (home improvement contractor scammed me). I now have to take it up and redo it. However, I don't want to have to take up the cement backerboard. I was thinking of using an embossing leveler over the cement backboard already down after I cleaned it up as much as possible, which is not going to be so easy to do. Can I just use the embossing leveler, then use the thin set over it and then put down the ceramic tiles? If not, is there any easy way to remove thin set from backerboards without totally replacing them?

This will be the first time I have tried this type of project, but I have been reading everything I get my hands on to make sure I have a pretty good handle on things before I attempt it . Accepting any helpful information.

what id try first is to get the tile up, and use a scraper to knock down the grooves made by the trile,
depending on how bad the floor is you can try a grinder to smooth it out.
as far as a leveler for the concrete board you can use thinset again , this is what id do in this situation,
