I agree. If you can get the tile off, you may be able to find the screws and take them out, making the removal of cement board a little easier, but I would just go in there and start breaking the hole thing up with a hammer(even a sledge). It makes for one heck of a cleanup job, but takes much less time than trying to find the screws under morter. Just demolish the thing,that's why its called demolition.

Get a few buddys over(entice them with the prospect of beer) and let them have at it.

Do be careful however, tile is very sharp once broken. Wear safety goggles, good gloves, and just use some common sense. You are basically going to have a bunch of broken glass to clean up afterwards.

Thanks, that's what I thought but it was worth a shot. I bought a bigger wrecking bar with a claw hammer on one end. Weighs less than a sledge hammer but works just as well and the other end can be used as a pry bar. Even with that it will be a long process. I am wearing a mask, goggles, hair covering, a shirt that covers my arms and gloves.
