I came home tonight to find my finished basement floating.My sump pump failed during the night or this morning and I have outside perimeter drains that drain into my sump pit (of course it has been raining for 2 nights and days non stop). When I stepped of the stairs my foot was just barely submerged. I have no area that is dry. My insurance company called in the pros. They arrived and have sucked up all that they could get. They a dehumidifier running (and its huge) and about 15 fans going. I have no complaints so far.

My concern is that I have 3 children 6 and under. We spend all our evenings and weekends in our basement and my children our on the floor playing and romping non stop. My oldest son has several outdoor allergies and is highly sensitive to mold. I am being told that the carpet and pad will stay..(as of right now). The pros are to return tomorrow and pull the baseboard and inspect for further water damage.

Having never been thru something like this should I have concerns about the impurities that have hitched a ride with the rain water? Example.. Both my neighbors have lawn care for weeds and fertilizers, (I do my own). There are pets in the neighbor hood that our constantly leaving me gifts in my yard and who knows what other microbes have rowed in.

My concern is for my children who still eat fallen popcorn and anything else they find on the floor, especially my 17 month old..who we know finds ever crumb. Plus all the toys that were laying on the floor that end up in mouths or fingers that played with the toys make their way their mouths or eyes. Also what about the bottom 2x4 secured to the floor. How do I know that in 3-6 months I won't have an infestation of mold taking over my basement (the water was over them in half the basement and 1/4" up them at the back end).

I'm not looking for a free remodeling job just some input to let me know if I have legitimate concerns or I'm being an over protective father. PLEASE HELP
