I just found an incredible deal on a Vinyl Sliding door. It happens to be a 3 lite OXO version. My opening though is a Standard 2 lite. This is a brand new, never installed unit, with dual pane vinyl clads. I don't want to cut an opening for the larger 3 lite frame. Instead, I want to miter cut the corners, top and bottom on one side...measure the daylight opening after removing the old aluminum/metal frame and windows...miter the horizontals to the correct length and re-attach the severed vertical. This side
will be the side behind the curtain...as well, it will be the side with the stationary lite, which will be easier to hide as well as easier to seal and ensure a water tight fit.
Question: 1) Possible or No? 2) Suggestions on "welding" the miter back together OR is that done with white caulking? 3) Has anyone out there actually done this successfully? Do you have any suggestions that will help me?
A lot of you are thinking I'm dumb for even trying, and will be throwing my money away...wait for one the perfect size...I'm going to get the frame, the 3 insulated double pane lites, screens and all mounting hardware for $25.00!!! It's not a huge loss if I screw it up...but I want it to work and look good!! Anything is better than what's there, a bent and broken metal slide that sticks the screen door and makes the door as heavy as it is. I'm going to do this with 2 of these sliders...but might just pick up a few extras for that price and fix the 2 sliders at my in-laws house...if it can be done and have a professional looking outcome.
Does anyone else have a deal this good??
