Hi,
I need to put new flooring in my basement. Currently there are 6x6 vinyl tiles. I'm not sure if they are asbestos tiles, but I thought it might be easiest to just roll new linoleum over top of it instead of removing them. There are a few loose tiles, but if I remove them and use something to level it out, would that work?

I really don't want to tear up the tile, especially if they contain asbestos.

I have read about putting a subfloor, like drilock, but I am afraid that moisture might get sucked up into the partilce board and make it bloat. It's an old house and I am not sure how much water gets into the basement. Also, I want to be cheap.

So any concerns about what I want to do? I'm pretty handy, but just moved to Ohio from Texas. Basements are a mystery to me.

A friend who sells houses say don't ask will my basement flood, its when will it flood. Nearly all basements get some water from time to time and if you have loose tiles now there will be more to follow. If you don't want to take up the tiles you might look at a subfloor made with sealed particle board and a plastic bubble surface unedr it to keep it away from seepage, can't remember the name. Drilock is a liquid applied to the concrete to block moisture so what particle board were you talking about. Pay attention to proper insulation if you are redoing the basement. This is a good read.
