Painting Brick Fireplace

I would like to paint the brick around our fireplace to update the look. I would like to know what products and methods of applying are available.

Thick roller 3/4in...oil primer...oil or latex paint...

Clean it well first. Use tsp (tri sodium phosphate and water) rinse well afterwords. In the old days people cleaned brick with carbon tetra chloride (sp?) and got a chance of getting cancer in the bargain. Careful what you use, make sure it is dry for a day or more before you put oil based primer on it. If its around the firebox, look for high heat paint.

Hello Sigsue,
Interior facebrick fireplace painting is an easy way to update your look, exterior is another story. Inspection 1st to be sure the brick & mortar are in good shape, tuck point (allow cure time) or caulk if needed. Next clean as needed, soot is difficult TSP, brushed & a good rinse. You may need a primer sealer (for stains & or glazed type brick for adhesion), it is best that the substrate is damp when using a waterbase, the primer it will wick in deeper. Next a good quality acrylic enamel will do fine, using a throw away brush and depending on the depth of the mortar joints a heavy nap roller cover and a strong arm.
