Have a rural house, low level humming (sounds like a generator on 24/7) is constant with no break in level of hum. My neighbor and I have gone to great lengths to find the source, he has decided it is the monitoring pumps at the county landfill which run constantly and their noise follows the river and flows into our valley. It is over 8 miles from here, so I question it, but have searched for the relay boxes on our phone lines to see if there is one that is generating that sound. Our area has frequent disruption of phone service with storms and road crews are always working somewhere. I have been near major power lines and while I note the noise when I'm near them, they do not follow me to my home (out of state) and they are less than 2 miles away. What I don't understand is why when I plug my ears, all noise is blocked except this particular humming. While searching for an answer to this problem, a suggestion online was to contact your county/state environmental agency for a noise assessment/abatement solution. They may actually know what is generating the sound in your area.

I found this discussion while doing a search for the near constant humming noise in my house. I used to hear this kind of noise in Toronto - Canada is about 500 miles away from where I live now (Chicago). At first I thought it has something to do with my ears. But it is not just me, my wife and others can also listen to it if they focus. Also I do not hear it outside of my house (like workplace) and some other places. Sometimes it stops completely ( during some months of the year). I am inclined to think this is due to wireless towers or some other phenomenon which is continuously emitting this kind low frequency noise.

Somebody should know why and from where this is coming.

Hi, I live on Long Island. Back in the spring of this year, I started hearing this noise on the weekend for about two hours a day and then it stopped. Starting late September/early October it is 24/7. My husband and kids do not hear it or they block it out. A few of my neighbors hear it and the are all female too! Maybe men can't hear it? Anyway, to this day I cannot figure out what it is. I hear it in the neighborhood and at local stores but not outside my town so it has to be something here. It is a humming kind of bass sound and I also feel a vibration. It does stop sometimes but very rarely and not for long (maybe 1hr). It wakes me up every night unless I take a tylenol pm but I don't want to make a habit of that. I did turn all the power off and still hear it. However, I don't recall if the noise was around during the hurricane. Anyway, any help that anyone can offer I'd really appreciate it.

This seems to be an old thread, but here goes with a new theory. I have been experiencing the low frequency noise with vibrations for about four years. I have tried most of the items mentioned to try to find the cause. When none of the "solutions" panned out, I hit the internet and scoured around for possible solutions. Here's what I am currently thinking:

I live in a (mostly) quiet suburban neighborhood. My neighbor of 30 years is a retired, do-it-yourself person who lives on minimum income. My latest thinking is that he has purchased the necessary materials and build himself a magnetic motor which which to generate his own electric power. Check out this website: DIY Magnetic Motor | fuel-less motor | money saver

As far as I can tell this is a form of perpetual motion machine which would account for it running at some level 24 hrs. a day; the fact that the hum seems to be "electrical" in nature; hum/vibration varies in intensity as if on some sort of rheostat.

The vibration I feel from the noise can be felt by me all through my house (also 3 neighbors houses), but I do not feel/hear it any where else. At times it has been so intensely annoying that I have had to leave my home. Also, my husband does not hear/feel it.

Anybody have any experience with this "magnetic motor?"

    Hi

I live in Worcester in the UK in a semi rural location, I have also been experiencing this low frequency humming! I can't sleep sometimes even with headphones on with the radio playing I can still hear it. I have checked all of the electrical appliances and have driven myself and my family crazy trying to work out what is going on and where it is coming from, others do not seem to be able to hear it but I can't hear it outside or in other locations so its not in my head or tinnitus of some kind! The intensity level of the hum increases and decreases and sometimes stops altogether for a few days or even a week or so, when the level increases I can also feel it as a mild vibration in my feet! I am sure my family think I am mad and it is a relief to find I am not the only one experiencing this irritation. I'm sorry I have no answers (yet) to help other sufferers but its just helpful to know that I am not suffering alone (was going to say suffering in silence but not appropriate! )

I too have experienced a low frequency hum throughout my house. It was driving me nuts. My wife couldn't hear it, only me. I traced it down to my vent stack pipes on my roof. I put a couple of 90 degree elbows on each vent to turn the outlet toward the roof. The low droning hum went away. I'm not saying that this will fix the problem that you are having but, you might give it a try.

I am also experiencing that low freq cycling hum/vibration. I can actually feel the vibration on floor surfaces (both cement floor in basement and wood floor of 3 season porch which has no foundation under it. Other folks experience it, some more pronounced than others. The phenomenon does not travel with me. It was 24/7. I DO live within a mile from a freeway and a block from railroad tracks. I am used to those noises and they are distinctly different. I went through all the above tests to no avail. It is definitely a 'harmonic vibration' transferring from somewhere in the ground. This seems like a well pump that goes under 'load' and then briefly off load. I was wondering if one of my neighbors were using some kind of geo-thermic heat/cooling system. At one point last year, the noise/vibration just stopped. In the last week it has come back much stronger. It disrupts sleep patterns and is really starting to agitate me. It is the 'cycling' that is annoying. The straight vibrations from the freeway or railroad do not irritate. They are a 'constant'. Just like a hand resting on your shoulder; you feel the pressure and can ignore it. This noise/vibration in that analogy is like someone poking you.
