Installing a mantel on a fireplace

I'm planning on using precast stone on my new fireplace. Do I install the wood mantel after the stone is set or before the stone is set? The stone will not be uniform in thickness and depth. I'm not sure how I could install the wood mantel after the stone is in place b/c of the lack of uniformity in the stone.

Thanks,

Schmidt

Before the stone is set, and make sure your mantle is stained and finished before you mount it or the cement you use for putting your stone in place can stain the wood vey badly.

Once your mantel is in place you should wrap it with 6 mil plastic visqueen and tape the seams. Mortar loves to get into the wood grain and leaves a gray stain.
