Installing laminate flooring on stairs-overhang not tall enough

When attempting to install laminate flooring on our stairs, my husband and I have found that the stair bull nose dose not completely cover the underlying stair. The step is 3/4'” while the bull nose is 3/8”, leaving 3/8” showing. One person suggested that we cut down the part of the step that is showing. I am afraid to do this as I think that it will diminish the amount of weight that can be distributed on the edge of the step. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You could simply slide the laminate flooring forward leaving the 3/8 gap at the rear then find a suitable trim such as quarter round or a cove type trim to cover the gap at the rear. Personally I would not put laminate on stairs but thats just me. How are you fastening it? If it was at all in my budget I would have removed the old stair treads and replaced them with oak. YES, its alot of work but WOW the look of finished oak is beautiful atleast to me. Good luck.
