Hi there and thanks for any input on this subject. We are attempting to replace an old tub surround. Is it necessary or important to remove the old one 1st? If so, what would be the easiest way? Are there any special tricks or useful tips that would help make this job go smoothly?

What type of surround is it? Tile, fiberglass?

The old surround seems to be fiberglass or very hard plactis. We were thinking of replacing it with another one similar in material.

If it a solid fiberglass surround about an inch form the top of the surround cut back the sheetrock. There you should see a nailing flange. Remove the nails, disconnect any plumbing fixtures and remove.

When you replace it renail the new one to the existing studs then patch and spackle the drywall where you cut it out.

If its glued onto the wall you may need to use pry bars to help "peel" it off the wall.
