Ceramic vs. Porcelain tile

Asked Dec 18, 2006, 09:27 PM — 2 Answers
I'm going to be tiling a bathroom. I'm told for the floor, porcelain is more durable and will be less prone than ceramic to cracking. This tile will be laid on a concrete sub floor. Will that fact help even the durability factor between the two types of tile? What would your preference be for the floor?
Any special advise or technique as to what type of thin set to use?
As far as tiling the ceiling in the tub area, any special glue, or techniques for gluing up there? Have any grouting tips for that same ceiling?
Thanks!

Porcelain is better choice for this installation. Use a expensive thick glue to put tiles on ceiling(the runny stuff is garbage)

First of all porcelian is only better in commercial applications- if a porcelian tile is not set correctly it will crack just as easily as a ceramic- in a bath situation there is not the high traffic area condition like a mall or car dealership (one would hope)- I have worked in the tile industry for over 10 years- also make sure there are no cracks in the subfloor if there is make sure you cover that with a crack suppression membrane (like nobleseal) or any tile you put down ceramic or porcelian will crack
Use a multipurpose thinset- do not use mastic on any tile over 6 inches it will never dry

Ceramic Tile Baseboard [ 1 Answers ]

Hello - I am putting in a ceramic tile floor in a bathroom and plan on cutting the tiles and using them for a baseboard. Is there a correct size that this baseboard should be? And should I put anything on the top edge of the tile to finish it off? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!
