portuguese citizenship and macau

Hi,

I'm an Australian citizen wanting to aquire Portuguese nationality.

My father was born (in the 1950's) in Shanghai to parents who descended from Portuguese citizens in Macau. He was a portuguese citizen until the 1980's. During the 1980's he lost his passport and when my mother went to the consulate in Sydney, Australia to re-apply for one for him (he was overseas at the time) she was told that Portugal was not going to continue issuing passports for citizens connected to Portugal through Macau. As a result my father applied and was accepted for Australian citizenship. He never applied to renew his Portguese passport again, but I don't believe he ever revoke his Portuguese citizenship either. He lived in Australia for hte rest of his life and died in 1987.

I have 3 questions:

Is the story my mum was told at the consulate true?

Would that mean he was not a Portuguese citizen when he died?

Do you think my application to acquire citizenship would be successful based on what I have told you?

Thanks!

B

Just a small correction...
I talked to my mum and she said my dad never did take out Australian citizenship so he died a portuguese. This might de-complicate things a bit?

I do not know for sure how that works.
But when my aunt was living in Macau (she was born in Acores, Portugal), was the time that Macau was turned over to China from Portugal.
SO I am guessing that, that can happen because Macau is no longer part of Portugal (that they could not issue him a passport).
But if he reapplied for Portuguese citizenship through the mainland I am sure he would have gotten it and been able to get a passport.
i dont know if that helps any

You have to register the birth of your father in Portugal. After that you are going to become eligible to apply for the Portuguese citizenship as son of a Portuguese citizen.
