Permanent Residence to the UK

Hello, I hope you can help me. I am from South Africa and am a South African citizen. I currently have a settlement visa which is for two years and expires in February 2008. My wife and two children both have UK citizenship (wife born in the UK). I am employed full time and am paying national insurance and taxes and would like to settle in UK permanently. What I would like to know is, should I apply for a marriage visa, settlement visa or permanent residence. Please could you advise as I am unsure how to go about things once my current visa expires.
