Marrying a Canadian

I Live In The Us And My Boyfriend Lives In Canada We Are Talking About Getting Married. But Haven't Decided When, How Long Can I Be In Canada Before We Would Have To Get Married. Also If I Just Move There What Would Be The First Process We Would Need To Do So I Can Stay. And If I Have A Record From 10 Years Ago For Shoplifting Would That Make Me Inadmissable?
