H1B visa holders rights and tax

Hi, I am part-time H1B visa holder. (my first year)
I am also a visual artist and I have recieved some grant monedy from foundations, small scholarships, stiphend/hornorurim for public art progrmas. I understand that I am not supporse to work for anyone but my H-1B emplyer, however, this is not working to earn money. Can I still recieve those money from art organzations or is it illegal? Should I contact immigration tax expersts? I don't want to be audited and have this fact to be an issue when I'm applying for different type of visa or Green card in the futrue.
