working in the uk

I currently am a us citizen and have just dropped out of a university after attending it for two years. I am now looking to travel for awhile before finally picking what career I want to go into. My wish is to move to england and work there, so that I can be closer to my boyfriend of two years. I understand that my only option is a work permit (for a work visa)? It seems that every way I turn there is no possible way that I'll actually be able to work in the uk... is there something that I've perhaps missed in my research and there are indeed other options open for me?
