H1-B Status change to B2 ( Visitor Visa )

Hi All,
I stumbled on this website by accident and I have similar questions to what most of the people have asked. Here is a step by step detail

1. I got my H1-B stamped in November of 2008. My company in a restructuring bid laid me off on June 15th 2009
2. My company lawyers told me that I had time till july 15th to get my H1-B transferred t another lawyer
3. I am actively interviewing but the problem is that the interview process would be over somewhere around 1st week of August
4. How can I stay legally in the country ? Should I apply for a status change from h1B to B2 ( visitor visa) ? Or is it okay to do Nothing and stay back till 2nd week of August
5. I hired an attorney who said I should not in any case stay longer than 180 days out of status. He said it was okay to do nothing and stay back till the 2nd week of August

Which route should I take ? Do nothing and stay back ? or Apply for a visitor visa and then stay back ?
