Transfer from H4 to H1

I am a Chartered Accountant from India-Was working in India for 6 years-First came to US on Dec 31, 2006- Current visa status: H4 expiring on Sept 30, 2007

I wish to work in the US. Please advice on the following issues:
1. Can I convert my visa status to H1B?
1. a. How much time does the transfer process take and what is the procedure
2. If yes when is it the earliest that I can start working.
3. If I have a employer who is interested in my skills but cannot sponsor my H1 B what is the option available.
4. If I want to work for the non profit making or voluntary organization, will it make a difference.
5 Is there any other status in which I can work
