Green Card and Travel

I have been told that during the probationary, 2 year Green Card period, travel outside the States is restricted to 6 months. Is that 6 months at one stretch or 6 months total?
What about after getting the 10 year Green Card? It used to be that one could stay outside the country for up to one year. Is that still correct?
Thanks.
Bob
