    I think I got screwed
In California I was dismissed by a large non profit agency for poor performance. I never received a poor review or a warning in person or via email. I only received a very positive email by a manager I didn't report to.
I signed a paper saying I agreed to the charges when I left but really didn't understand what I was signing as I was very nervous and confused.
I received no severance and hr hasn't responned to questions of how I go about picking up my COBRA. Thanks.

CA, like most states is at will employment. Which means you can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Unless there is a policy for severance you may not be entitled to any.

No, people normally don't get severance when they are fired, they go file for unemployment. Was there a contract that promised you severance or any agreement when you were fired.

There is no requirement unless you are under contact to receive warnings, and you do not have to be reviewed.

What they said happened or was happening, is it true or is it false ?

If false, why did you sign that you agreed to it.

Cobra will be mailed to you, normally about a month after you are let go. You can call and also discuss Cobra with the insurance companies that you had,

That's prett clear and I appreciate youjr reply. Re the paper I guess I didn't respond to the situation as I was totally blind sided. There was no paper re severance. And they won't give me a letter saying I did a good job since I guess I signed the paper. I learn something going forward. Could I ask if it's typical not to give employees severance? Would have a lawyer help me at all? Thanks.

Its not atypical. Especially when an employee is terminated for cause.

No I don't think an attorney can help you. If you can find one to give a free consultation give it a shot.
