removing a wood burning stove

I can remove the inside stove and take the pipe out but how do I cap off the top to make sure outside weather doesn't come in on the inside. I replaced my woodburning stove with an electic fireplace. Do I have to seal the roof or can I leave the outside chimney in case I change my mind.
