garage door opener

Hello,

My garage door fails to open. With the door in the closed position, I press the remote, it reverses itself and closes the door more, then the door opens just a few inches. I tried adjusting the increase or decrease travel screw but it does not fix the problem.
The opener is a Sears 1/2 HP chain drive. ( older model )
Thanks you in advance if anyone can give me some input.
Brian

I believe most Sears GDOpeners have a series of small switches inside the remote, take off the back of the remote, see if you see them, note the position of each, then, see if you can determine from your owners manual (or by going online to Sears.com, clicking on parts or calling 800-366-part and ordering a manual) what postion each switch should be in --- perhaps the switches have been jarred by dropping the remote ? And I should have mentioned this first, but see if you remote battery is low, if not sure replace it with a fresh battery and see if that might the solution.

Thanks for your suggestions, I ended up getting a tech for the repairs. He said it was an internal problem with the travel set adjustment screws, which control the limits for opening and closing of the door.
