hooking up a new DVD to an old TV

hello all!
I am having problems with a 95 model TV with only a coax cable connection and a new DVD player with no coax hook up. I bought a converter box and now the picture comes through beautifully but the sound is not coming through except in barely audible small blurbs every once in a while. I have switched the cables into every possible position and was wondering if there is any suggestions outside of buying a new TV anyone could shoot my way I would greatly appreciate them
Thanks!

Be sure you are on Channel 3 or 4 as selected on modulator.
Need to hook the red, white and yellow from DVD to red, white, and yellow on Modulator.(composite). Verify

Perito agrees: The sound comes through the red and white RCA connectors.
