Is it because I went to a ghetto school?

The orientation night for my high school was a few weeks ago and this has been bugging me a bit. Nobody from my old school is going to my high school and I'm probably the only student to go to the high school. I was in the minority of my middle school (which was mostly African American, I'm Caucasian) and I'm going to a mostly white high school. At the orientation the teachers really seemed to like me, but as soon as they found out where I went to school at they suddenly looked down on me. I took honors Algebra 1 in 8th grade and when I was talking to the math chair she asked my mother if she was going to keep me in algebra again. I did phenomenal in 8th grade, passing all of my classes and doing great on the standardized tests. With the Writing Assignment I got a 5 out of 6 (great writing isn't my best attribute. ), on the Gateway I scored a 102 (second highest in my school. One of my close friends got a perfect. Grr!), and I got the second highest ACT Explore cumulative results (I got a 22 with a perfect in Science and an almost perfect in Math). Is it because I went to an urban school that is looked down upon why they think I'm stupid? (Trust me, the school was fantastic! I had the best teachers and I learned so much from them!) All answers are appreciated!

Well, there are two ways to look at this.

1. You're right. They looked down on you and judged you too soon.

2. Because you're going to a new school, (which is very scary!) you might feel a bit insecure and misread the situation. Its possible you were just over sensitive to them "looking down on you" but in reality, maybe they weren't.

Either way, it sounds like you'll be fine! It'll take some getting used to, but in a short time they'll see what a great student you are and that you have a wonderful personality.

Yes people tend to catergorize you by your neighborhood, school, friends, etc....

I live in a poor section of a rich suburban area. When my kids were in grade school they got treated like that.
If one kid came to school with lice they pulled all the kids from 'the crest' and checked their hair.
They rarely bothered checking any rich kids hair.

What reply did the math chair get back when they asked that question?
Time heals things so just go to school, make sure they have you in the appropriate classes and show them what you are made of.
They will be eating their words when you graduate out of their school top in your class.

Thank you so much, I figured that was the case! It hasn't bothered me too much, I wanted to know what others thought. I'm just going to enjoy high school and prove them wrong.

My mother told her that I was doing very well in Algebra and that I would more than likely take Geometry next year (which is now TRUE because I passed the Gateway!!! Woohoo!). I'm very excited to get the opportunity to make a better reputation for my middle school! If I get Valedictorian or Salutatorian I'm certainly going to mention everyone from there.

trust me, if they look down on you and think you're stupid and you have good grades, you should be glad of it, because that means that they ae jealous in a way, and they can't accept how good you are, and how much better you are than a lot of the students, now you just gotta make them accept you, take even better grades, and show them that you are not stupid, and that you have knowledge

This is a good chance for you to prove something to yourself and to others. Work hard, study well, have fun, and do the best you can in every thing. It will be you that reaps the benifits and other will wish they were you.

Sadly ( at least in Atlanta) the inner city schools are very poor, and yes if they were to go to one of the outlying schools, teachers would worry about thier ability to keep up, even if they were top students where they were at.

You write like an adult, no matter where you came from, do your best. Remember this: the windshieid is bigger than the rearview mirror. I'm sure your parents are proud of you. The fact you are concerned shows maturity in itself. Good luck and GOD bless you. Aim high and be whatever you want to be.
