    Trane XR80 Furnace will not stay lit
    Hi all,
    I have a 6 year old Trane XR80 furnace that will not stay lit. It will light for about 2-3 minutes than will go out. It will stay out until the system is turned off for a significant amount of time. The filters are new and I have cleaned the burner parts. What other things can I check? Thanks for your time.

    The flame sensor is probably dirty and needs to be cleaned. If you do not know what this part is it might be better to call for professional service.

    Ir is a thin rod type item and needs to be cleaned with sandpaper or steel wool. Be careful the insulator can break. Then you can buy a new one.

    Just wanted to say Thank You - It's 10PM - 25 degrees outside - Would have been a chilly night. Cleaned the sensor and back in business. Of course I had to Google what it looked like :) Thanks again. WES

    Hvac 1000 THANK YOU!! This thread saved me from a fridged night. It's been one of the coldest weeks in recent history and my furnace cut out somewhere between bed and 2am when I woke in a shiver this evening. It's now 2:15 am and I have a clean flame sensor and HEAT!

    It always makes me feel good that just regular folks can come to this site and get information to help them get out of a bind. We have many helpers here just like myself who devote our time to helping those in need of information that for the most part is not readily available to the general public. The information we provide is backed by an untold number of years experience in the HVAC trade and while we are not perfect we try our best to help all who ask for it. Thank you for your kind words and I am sure the rest of the gang that helps out here also appreciates your recognition of there time devoted to answering questions on this site.

    I just wanted to say thank you as well to hvac1000. It was freezing this morning when I woke up after some research I found this site and realized the flame sensor was probably the culprit. I just cleaned it with some sandpaper and everything is working well again! Thanks so much! I was dreading calling a service tech and dropping who knows how much money. I greatly appreciate that you take the time to help us "ordinary folk" out.

    It is always good news when the furnace is working again. Remember that tip and come back if you have other HVAC problems. We have a great group of people here who do there best to help out the many posters that are having problems and it is a very nice touch for you to post a thank you to all of us.

    Thanks so much mine has been messing up for a few days now, it got to cold last night so I got on here to research it and this came up as soon as my husband read this he went and tried it and it worked now I have my babies warm in there bed again

    I'm having the same problem. I cleaned the flame sensor as suggested and I'm still having the same problem. It lights for a couple of minutes and goes right back out. Please help.

    Right after is turns off I hear 3 clicks and the fan keeps going.
