Solar heating

Asked Dec 30, 2007, 08:12 PM — 2 Answers
Help! I have my first hot tub, and it's wonderful! But the cost to run the darn thing is quite expensive. I live alone and so don't have the luxury of a lovely male person to help me with this (much to my dismay!). I need to start somewhere, so I'm starting here:

Is solar heating a good way to heat a hot tub?

Is it terribly expensive to install?

How do I go about finding a reputable solar heating dealer?

Um, that's all I can think to ask at this time, but if you, dear answerer, think of something else to advise, I would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks, and happy hot-tubbing!

Hot tubs require a lot of heat to stay warm. The solar system you would have to have to heat it would cost you a fortune and depending upon the amount of sun light available would not be useful during many days of the year.

I would stick with the tried and true systems. Propane, oil, natural gas, are all sources of heat that are dependable but costly also. My neighbor has a wood fired unit I hooked up to his California red wood tub but you go to buy or cut the wood.

Nothing is cheap because you still have to buy the boiler to heat the water no matter what fuel you use. If you are very skilled with tools it is possible to build your own heat system but still the materials can cost a bit of money.

Good luck with your project but I believe you are barking up the wrong tree when you consider solar as a hot tub heat source.

Do a Google search for more info there are 100's of pages on the subject.

Thank you for answering. I'll do more research, but I imagine you're right on. I live in Salt Lake City, and in the winter there are sometimes days and days of inversions which hide the sun.
