The question you are asking can be answered in many different way since the outside unit can be controlled by the thermostat or a cut off thermostat out in the unit itself. When was this new work done? I am trying to get an idea if this is a new problem since the new thermostat or a existing problem?

The old unit was a split system Comfortmaker 12 seer heat pump with 5 kw heat strips, the new Goodman was installed: September 5 2008 and he installed 10 kw heat strips goodman p/n HKR-10. So its like in the 20's now and I can hear the compressor running. Even when in defrost the strips don't kick on. And when the unit turns off, the blower continues to run for at least 2 minutes. The Comfortmaker was installed BEFORE we bought the hose in 2006. Same yr the tstat was replaced.

    See this:

    Post model numbers.

    The installer messed up.

At 17F, the HP should likely be on AUX heat alone.

You should have based on certain outdoor temp ranges. Not going into details.

    1. >x HP
    2. <x and >y HP+AUX heat
    3. Aux heat <z

    2. Is the temperature that the HP creates the same output as the heat loss of your house (balance pt). It's different for every house.

    3. determined by mfr

Alternative methods in the thermostat can be used for 2.

Model # GPH1348H21AC serial# 0809494294 R-22 refrigerant copeland scroll compressor. And the thermostat is a Honeywell programmable RTH5000 series the heater is usually set to 70 but some cases 72 or 68.

See the install manual page 7, items #6 and #7

Electric heat should come on in defrost (2-3 min max).

    The outdoor thermostat is optional.

The latter can be performed by some of the Honeywell Vision Pro thermostats, but you have to run a sensor cable from the stat to outside.

Not much info on the heat strips. Goodman HKR-15C Installation Instructions and Product Brochures

Wiring Diagram comes with supplimental heat unit and is supposed to be posted on the unit.

    You may have two issues:

    1. Problem with defrost board
    2. No OT kit.

OK are the 10kw HKR-10 the sames as all the others? I may call the tech to come take a look. When in defrost the electric strips don't come on it just blows cold then. When in heat pump mode it don't blow warm it blows like cool air. Its warm but not.

I think you failed to mention whether the heat strips even work in say Aux or Em heat mode. Do they?

Does the reversing valve change state in defrost?

Does it have the optional outdoor temperature sensing kit?

Do you need it in your climate?

Blowing cold air is a sign that the reversing valve is working.

The lower the outdoor temp, the less heat you can move and the colder the air.

First place to look is the heat strips themselves.

OK, I will probably call the tech since the unit is still under warranty.

I have not tried the aux or them setting (what ever the tstat has) but I will. It dose not have a outdoor tstat. It gets in the teens to the 10*F-12*F and I still hear the unit running!
