Outside AC unit will not turn on.

Asked Jun 7, 2007, 05:45 AM — 3 Answers
Here we go...Texas heat and AC problem...
The out side unit will not turn on! I bypassed the Thermostat and connected the why to are wire and the blower turns on , but the outside unit does not come on at all, I have checked the breaker, and have turned it off and back on, but same problem...is there any fuse in the unit itself that might have blown?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you referring to the fan or the compressor? Is the circuit breaker tripped? If it is you may have seized compressor (just went through that, myself) I'd like more info...

If I set the thermostat to below the room temperature the fan which is set in auto mode will start working, but if I go outside and look the AC unit, it is dead...neither the fan or the compressor work! I have turned the breaker for the unit ON, OFF ...but nothing happened. I am trying to find out if there might be a fuse between the breaker and the compressor/fan..

Thanks

Have a friend or someone help you with this. You stand outside at the unit and have the friend turn the thermostat to cool, see if you hear a loud click when it is turned on, if you do that means that the 24 volt power is getting to the contactor and the contactor is closing. Now you need to look for another Box that might control your unit, there may be one on the wall right beside your unit or it could be by where the furnace is but it sounds like you are not getting the 240 volt power to the unit.

Let us know what you have tried and what did not work...........
