New compressor or new central air unit?-and what brand

i am just told, here in Phoenix, that my compressor is shot. My AC unit is a 3 ton, roof top, and is 23 years old. I can get a new compressor for which is covered by my warranty except for the incidentals which I understand can get up there, EPA fee, freon, etc. or a new unit. I am told that the compressor could hold me for about 5 years if one of the other motors doesn't go.

Also the filter was dirty and i read that it can take out the compressor and I certainly hope that is not the case. I simply could not get up to where the filter was until I got help. It is changed, but too late I guess.

If I get a new unit what would be the best reasonably priced 3 ton roof top unit I can get? I am told Lennox is not the way to go. Trane and Goodman were mentioned by the technician. Any feed back on Goodman?

Is it advisable to get a new compressor, if they are available for my elderly unit? I sure dont' have the 4000 that i am being told the new one will cost me. Plus with the drop in propery value I am not looking forward to putting more money into my investment right now. Also not looking forward to melting.

Thanks
B

The quality of any A/C unit is not a brand name problem.
Brands are all just about equal and all work.
The problem is finding a qualified contractor to do the install to start with.

Replace the unit because 23 years leaves to many other failure problems that can happen at any time.

Put the air filter in the return air in the main return air grill in the ceiling. This way it will be inside so you can change it easily.

I am very puzzled as to how it blew frigid air last time i used it, worked fine for heat, and now poof only slightly coolish air. would a dirty filter damage the compressor in just two days of use, or was it most likely just waiting to happen? i know you have no crystal ball, but what do you think?

Many possibilities and what you mentioned could be one of them.
I actually think that the 23 years of age finally got the best of the unit. Time for a funeral. Then get the new one.
