New compressor or new central air unit?-and what brand

i am just told, here in Phoenix, that my compressor is shot.

My AC unit is a 3 ton, roof top, and is 23 years old. I can get a new compressor for which is covered by my warranty except for the incidentals which I understand can get up there, EPA fee, freon, etc. or a new unit. I am told that the compressor could hold me for about 5 years if one of the other motors doesn't go.

Also the filter was dirty and i read that it can take out the compressor and I certainly hope that is not the case. I simply could not get up to where the filter was until I got help. It is changed, but too late I guess.

If I get a new unit what would be the best reasonably priced 3 ton roof top unit I can get? I am told Lennox is not the way to go. Trane and Goodman were mentioned by the technician. Any feed back on Goodman?

Is it advisable to get a new compressor, if they are available for my elderly unit? I sure dont' have the 4000 that i am being told the new one will cost me. Plus with the drop in propery value I am not looking forward to putting more money into my investment right now. Also not looking forward to melting.

Thanks! I am obviusly in a quandry about the expense, but it sounds like i would be throwing good money after more good money over and over again.

I am very puzzled as to how it blew frigid air last time i used it, worked fine for heat, and now poof only slightly coolish air. would a dirty filter damage the compressor in just two days of use, or was it most likely just waiting to happen? i know you have no crystal ball, but what do you think?
