Move the A/C heating unit

I will slowly be able to make changes to my house. Right now I need to fix the ducts because they are old and they are loose because of some repair. I believe I can move the whole unit directly up to the 2nd floor to the main duct space and a closet and still access the duct pattern. How much would that cost? 6K?

My downstairs is 600 sq ft and the small amount of space gained could be huge. Are these units getting smaller any time soon. Also it is hot upstairs and I wonder if it is good or bad to use up the hot air as the intake.

Do you have any suggestions for reading during the hot Austin summer about a/c efficiency and innovations?

Thank you : )
