I am planning renovations for my house which I am told is a 1948 'Sears' type house 1.5 stories, original wood siding, now with metal siding. Thick plaster walls with no insulation. Attic has insulation upto the top of joist. Floors have no insulation. Floors are cold on feet. Duct work only in crawlspace. House is in the upstate of SC, HOT in summer (~3months), Cold in winter (~3months), rest of year is comfortable. Forced air AC and gas heat. My electric bills seem ok but my gas heat bill is outrageous! I am planning to deal with insulating the walls when the renovations start however floors need attention now and maybe attic.

1) How should I handle the crawlspace? I was planning to get ~R-25 batt insulation and stuff it in between the floor joist with vapor barrier facing house. Is this the best thing to do? If so do I need to know anything in particular? Where is the best place to purchase insulation?


2) How much insulation should I have in the attic? Can I DIY this project with materials and equipment from Lowes/Home Improvement

not sure about the crawl space but if the insulation is up to the top of the floor joists in the attic thats about the amount your supposed to have. this project should be a DIY and I'm sure they have all the stuff you would need at either lowes or home depot
