Is this a mini-split/ductless unit?? Follow the instructions!!

As far as standard split systems go (inside air handler with ductwork and an outside condenser) this may help:

Colors don't really matter - it's what both ends are connected to! Here's an attachment from Honeywell (they kind of standardized colors for terminal designations): I would make the R - Red. I would Make the Y yellow, I would make the W white, and you probably have a blue or green - this would be your G. This would require a thermostat that has batteries. If it is AC only then you can take W and connect it to C for power (R and C are power - don't touch them together!! It should be off when you do this). As far as the two black wires - use these to break the Y to the outside condenser: connect a short piece of two-wire thermostat wire to each of the blacks then take the other two ends and use a wire-nut to connect to one side of the "Y" and the other to connect where "Y comes from" (this will also be a two-wire cable going to the outside unit: you need a common "C" and "Y" to turn on the outside unit - these go the two sides of the contactor).
