Hi,

We have a Grundfos hot water circulation pump installed. All was fine and dandy until last week when we had a water outage for several hours. Now the pump is making terrible noises and I disconnected it.. Questions:

1. Is there a way to repair it or do I need to get a new one?
2. I saw the same pump for sale for about $200. Is this something that a non-pro (me) could install by himself or should I call a plumber?

First of all : as there was a period during which there was a water outage, air may have entered the system. Have you already "bled" the system to allow air to escape? As the system is under pressure, any air in it will cause lot's of noise.
(Open these small air escape valves till water comes out, and repeat that on all other valves. Repeat that process several times over a couple of days till the noise stops)

It is also possible that the pump became overheated by use during the water outage, and has to be replaced.

Grundfos depends upon the circulating water to act as a lubricant for the pump. If the water stopped flowing your pump is more likely damaged. Most Grundfos pumps offer a kit to repair BUT success with these kits is never perfect. I suggest buying new and follow the directions for hook up.

Thank you for the reply.. Sorry for the ignorance but where exactly do I find those "small air escape valves" you referred to? The pump I have is a Grundfos UP 15-18 SU.. I looked all around it and couldn't find anything that looked like it wanted to be opened...
