heating and air questions

Tempstar Central air. Outside unit the fan will not engage but if just nudged will take off. Sounds as if unit tries to cycle while fan is running but does not. After a few minutes fan shuts off. No issue with unit at all. then this issue. Any advice? It is an electric unit

My American Standard electric furnace runs only when the thermostat is on the "on" position and not when on the "auto" position. So basically it's running manually. I replaced the thermostat thinking it was the problem but that did not help. Now the AC works fine on "auto." Can you help me?
