Is it possible to convert a lp gas water to a natural gas water heater or will I need to get a new heater?

I have a 110k BTU peerless gas hw boiler, from 1990. For some reason I have become curious as to if the pilot size is normal as of late. One thing I have noticed is that you can hear it - Pffffffffffffffft (once you get about 2 feet from the boiler). Sounds kind of like a propane torch set...

I am trying to light my gas furnace in my house but it won't light. I light the pilot and when I turn the dial to on the flame goes away and no gas in going through! What am I forgetting or doing wrong?

The pilot light on our State Censible gas water heater will not stay lit... it is not the thermacouple and it is protected from drafts. We light it daily... we get enough hot water for about 2 showers and a load of dishes. What could be causing this problem?
