Condenser fan not run and locked, worth try chang capacitor?
My AC has been working fine until today. The condenser fan (outdoors) doesn't turn on, but I do hear the hum of the compressor. I'm assuming the compressor is operating OK. When I finally discovered the problem, it already ran for 3 hours and the freon tubes were hot.

Afterward I did couple tests and found that the fan was completely locked with or without the power on. Since the compressor is turned on, I assume the contactor is fine.

I go through couple of forum (include this one), most of cases about dead fan were caused by bad capacitor but their fan can spin freely by hand, mine is complete lock.

My question is, should I try to replace the capacitor? Or Is there any other place I should check before I claim my fan is dead?

I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank you very much in advance.

If your fan is locked up it is dead. A capasitor will only start the fan. Has nothing to do with it being frose up

You can test the fan motor using a multitester. But more than likely the fan motor is deader than a door nail and the fan motor needs replaced if the fan is locked up.

Agree with above answers, if fan is locked, or even stiff to turn by hand, you will need a new motor. I would suggest replacing cap at same time, just because it's a good thing to do. No need to look any further into this at this point, just replace motor and cap and you will most likely be all set. Good luck and please let us know how things work out.
