Compressor turns off and doesn't turn back on

Hi. I've been having a problem for a few days. I have a split-ac system only 2-3 years old. I usually leave the system on auto and cool. Lately, the compressor unit works for some time, then turns off but never comes back on again. However, the blower keeps running. I have replaced the furnace air filter and the thermostat. And although I haven't hosed/cleaned the compressor fins etc., I don't see any obstruction from the outside either. (The compressor is "protected" with a cover during winter.) No oil leakage from the compressor can be seen and the copper tubes are warm and cool after 10 minutes of running.

I had left the thermostat in the off position for 2-3 days. Today I turned it back to cool and the compressor started running. But after a few hours, it stopped. I observed the temperature of the copper tubes again after I realized that it had stopped and both felt like at ambient temperature - not warm or cool.

My thoughts are that there's a loose connection somewhere, probably at the compressor relay/contactor, or that the relay gets stuck in the off position somehow. Could a clogged drain for condensed water be causing this? I would've liked to see if 24V was coming to the compressor unit or not when it wouldn't start but I'm afraid it won't be possible to measure it. Could it be the fuse at the 240V box near compressor? But why would it work every 2-3 days for a few hours?

I don't think there's a high head-pressure issue or something since I haven't seen or pressed the reset button so far on the compressor and it worked this afternoon. By the way, it is a westinghouse compressor. And I think it is 13 SEER.

Please let me know what you think the problem is and suggest possible troubleshooting steps (measuring current, voltage, resistance might not be possible). I know I'm taking away an electrician's basic tools but your time and help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a box the your condesate drains into and then is removed by a pump?...if so it is possible tht the tube runing from the pump is stopped up and can not get rid of the water fast enough, and the pump has a safty switch that will not let the compressor run if the drain box is full or it would flood you.
