Compressor Fan Motor keeps shutting off

With the AC on and running the temperature started to rise in the house. I put my hand next to the register. Air was blowing but was not cool air. I went outside and the compressor fan motor wasn't blowing. On another occasion the same thing happened and I went outside and the fan motor was making a loud buzzing sound like it was stuck.

I put my hand on the fan motor and it as very hot. I sprayed some water from a nearby hose and within a minute the fan motor came back on and the house cooled down.

Is it normal for the fan motor to overheat and shutting off automatically? Does the fan motor need to be replaced or is it a capacitor that needs to be replaced? Or is it something else?

Thanks.

Fan motor is bad. Always replace the capacitor when changing the motor. Th caoacitor size will be stamped on the box and side of the new motor
